Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler Off to Strong Starts at THE PLAYERS Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The 2024 edition of THE PLAYERS Championship started with a bang as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler delivered impressive performances in the first round. McIlroy, the 2019 PLAYERS champion, carded a 5-under 67, putting him just one stroke behind the leaders, while Scheffler, the world No. 1, posted a solid 69 in his quest for a historic third consecutive win at TPC Sawgrass.

McIlroy’s Resilience Shines at TPC Sawgrass

Despite not having his best ball-striking day, Rory McIlroy showcased his vast experience and shot-making skills. He started strong with birdies on his first two holes but encountered setbacks with bogeys at 3 and 7. However, he found his rhythm with four consecutive birdies from holes 9-12 and finished in style with an exceptional punch shot from the trees on 18, leading to a final birdie.

McIlroy hit just four fairways but made up for it with his stellar iron play, gaining nearly 3.5 strokes on approach shots and hitting 13 greens in regulation. He also excelled on the greens, gaining 2.7 strokes with the putter. His 67 was the lowest score in his featured pairing, which included world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and No. 3 Xander Schauffele.

Scottie Scheffler’s Steady Performance

Scheffler, who is aiming to become the first golfer in history to win three consecutive PLAYERS Championships, opened with a solid 3-under 69. His round included four birdies and just a single bogey. He hit 10 of 14 fairways and 13 greens in regulation, displaying his trademark consistency.

Unlike his playing partners, Scheffler parred the first two holes but made an immediate statement by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on the third. He followed it up with a precise wedge shot to five feet on the fourth hole, securing another birdie. A two-putt birdie on the par-5 ninth helped him turn in 33. However, a wayward tee shot on No. 10 resulted in his only bogey of the day. He rebounded with a birdie on 12 but failed to capitalize on any additional scoring opportunities on the back nine.

Leaderboard and Tournament Outlook

After the first round, Lucas Glover, J.J. Spaun, and Camilo Villegas share the lead at 6-under. McIlroy sits just one stroke behind, while Scheffler remains within striking distance at 3-under. With three rounds to play, both McIlroy and Scheffler are well-positioned to contend for the title.

As the tournament progresses, McIlroy’s ability to navigate the course with controlled ball flights and clutch putting will be key. Meanwhile, Scheffler’s steady approach and recent dominance at TPC Sawgrass make him a formidable challenger.
